What To Do With Spell Remains

After you conduct your spell, you might have some remnants leftover such as candles, wax, salt, herbs and ashes. What you should do with those remains depends on the kind of spell that was done and what remains you have left!

Burying/Scattering/Leaving

The location where you bury, scatter or leave your spell remnants depends on your desired outcome. To keep things at home or draw things in, you'll want to keep it near you. To send away, you send it away! Makes sense, right? Some Specific Examples:

  • Your Front Yard/Door: Drawing Something In, Protecting Your home

  • Your Back Yard/Door: Keeping/Maintaining Something

  • Someone Else's Yard: Spell to Effect That Person or Place

  • Someone Else's Front Door: Cursing, Influencing That Person Directly

  • Cemetery: Banishing, Letting Something Go

Try to keep in mind any wildlife that is or could be around and don't leave anything that could be potentially harmful to it!

Burning

Burning is generally recommended for banishment and release spells. Some decide to burn all of their spell remains to release the spell into the air.

Always practice fire safety when burning spell remnants! Keep the fire safely contained and make sure that everything is safe to burn and won't emit toxic fumes!

Wind/Blowing

Remaining ashes or herbs from any spell can be blown away. On an especially windy day, you can let the element of air literally take your spell off your hands and carry it out for you.

If you are sending something away, take it further away from your house to release it and visualize your remnants traveling far from you. If you are drawing something in, stay close to home and visualize the remains going out to retrieve your desired outcome for you!

Ocean, River Streams or Storm Drains

Let the water wash it away for you! Generally used for releasing and banishing. If you have access to an oceans, you may also choose to release something that you eventually want to see return with the currents.

Again, try to keep wildlife in mind when doing so!

Re-Use

Of course your altar tools and things like scissors, crystals, cups, bowls, etc. can be cleansed and re-used. So can many things, like drawstring bags, bottles, and items that can't be safely returned to the earth without causing unnecessary waste.

Some things that cannot be re-used for other spells, such as candles, may be repurposed for mundane purposes to get further use.

Trash

In the event that your spell left you with items that are not biodegradable, re-useable or safe to return to earth without potentially causing harm to wildlife or the environment, you can throw it away. This is best done for spells that are meant to release or send things away from you. Of course, if the spell is to keep or draw something in, you'll want to keep the it in your home!

Follow Your Instincts

So which method do you choose? Think about your spell and which one you feel serves it the best. These are just a general rule of thumb, but I always say every witch has their own way, so don't be worried if you want to do something that is seemingly contradictory to the methods listed above. Just remember that disposing of your remnants is an important part of your spell. Be kind to the Earth and thank her as you deliver your remnants and send your magick on its' way!
