3 Steps to Good Affirmations

Affirmations are like short, clear and positive mini-spells that can be incorporated into your daily routine to help uplift, connect and set intentions. There are three key steps to crafting good affirmations:

#1. Word Choice

Avoid terms like “I want” and instead use “I am/I have” for the things that you desire. As an example, instead of "I will be confident" say "I am confident."

Good terms to follow "I":

  • Am

  • Have

  • Want

  • Thank

  • Attract

Terms to avoid if possible:

  • Want

  • Need

  • Will have

#2. Energetic Focus on HAVE not WANT

Just like in your wording, your focus needs to be on already having it and not the desire to have it. This part can be difficult. You may need to repeat the affirmation regularly before this part can be achieved. This may take practice! As you say the affirmation, you need to believe that what you are saying is true, and you should to feel the way you will feel when it is true.

If you are doubting yourself constantly thinking "this is a lie" with your affirmations, you may need to start by rewording them into something that you can believe to be true. For example, if you start with "I have a good job" and have a hard time believing it because you are still looking for a job (or in a job you don't care for) try rewording it to something like "I am worthy of success" or something you can believe that gets you in the right direction!

#3. Follow Through!

Take action with your affirmation! First you write it, say it, believe it, then you be it. If your affirmation is to be more confident, do something that you feel you maybe couldn't have done without that confidence. It may push you outside of your comfort zone at first, but it doesn't have to be a huge first step. Just start with one small step in the right direction!

Ways to use affirmations:

  • Write it down somewhere that you will see it every day

  • Use as a part of a spell or ritual

  • Say it out loud or internally as a regular part of your regular morning or nighttime routine

  • Write it on a piece of paper to keep in your purse

  • Remember it and then repeat it in your mind when you need it
